Who runs it, and can I trust it?

Fair questions to ask before you enrol your child. Here is who stands behind the programme.

A Scripps franchise

Spelling Bee in Nigeria is the official Nigerian route to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Nearly 20 years of experience

The Young Educators Foundation has supported literacy and spelling programmes in Africa for close to two decades.

A Nigerian partner on the ground

Lucid Education Initiative brings the programme to families and schools across Nigeria.

From your living room to the stage

Most of the programme happens at home, on a phone or laptop. Your child steps onto a stage only at the final rounds.

What your child gains

The prize is one outcome. These are the skills every speller takes home.

Stronger spelling and vocabulary

Weekly practice with curated word resources, not last-minute cramming.

Confidence on stage

Public speaking practice is built into the training, so the microphone feels familiar.

Sharper thinking

Spellers learn to break down words, use clues and stay calm under pressure.

Recognition

Certificates for every speller, with medals, trophies and prizes for the top places.

When Nigeria joined the Scripps family, one speller took the first title in front of a live audience.

A word from our convener

Eugenia Tachie-Menson leads the programme. She founded the Young Educators Foundation and brought the Scripps franchise to Ghana nearly two decades ago, making Ghana the first African nation to take part.

In her speech at the Nigerian launch she describes why she believes young Africans can excel on the global stage.
